Pines Toastmasters Club
We are one of a number of Toastmasters Clubs spread throughout the world and we cater for the 18+ age bracket (this is basically due to current legislative requirements for working with youth).

People come along for various reasons but probably the most common is simply that they want to overcome the very real fear of speaking in public. It’s also about learning to communicate effectively.

Wouldn’t it be great if you are asked to be Best Man at a wedding, to be Master of Ceremonies (MC) at an event, or simply to speak or give a toast (or a roast) at a convention or party or the like, and you had the confidence to say "of course I will".

Now you will hear or read about techniques to help with this such as rehearsing a speech over and over, using palm cards, deep breathing just before presenting, imagining the audience has no clothes on etc. No doubt these are great techniques (except maybe the last one) but the one thing that is usually overlooked is simply the basic idea of practise.

At Toastmasters you can focus on developing skills, writing speeches and have the opportunity to deliver those speeches in front of a supportive and non-judgemental audience. Now what could be better than that?

Goals
Our members (and we have around 20) live in or near the Lawnton, Strathpine and Petrie area of Brisbane and get together twice a month.

The primary goal of a Toastmasters club is to learn new skills in public speaking and to practise what we’ve learned - in different ways.

The advantage of a club is that we do this in a friendly and supportive atmosphere so if one of us botches a speech, well, there is no great embarrassment because everyone else in the club has at one time or another too.

Once you start to overcome the fear aspect then you have a great opportunity to develop your speaking skills; improve your articulation, tackle those ummm's and aahhh's, develop effective hand gestures, improve your body language, stance and so on.

Don't feel it's too easy though - we do evaluate each other in a positive way and offer good advice on how to improve your overall presentation.

But wait, there's more... It’s not just public speaking of course, because we cover other real world things like how to run a business session, present an educational talk, speak for a minute or two off the cuff on a subject you’ve just been given (table topics), give a toast (and in fact be the Toastmaster for an event), chair a meeting and so on.

If you are wanting to perfect your skills in multimedia presentations, the club owns a projector to help you to perfect your presentation skills.

Toastmasters International
Toastmasters International is a world leader in communication and leadership development. There  are more than 345,000 memberships. Members improve their speaking and leadership skills by attending one of the 15,900 clubs in 142 countries that make up our global network of meeting locations.

The world needs leaders. Leaders head families, coach teams, run businesses and mentor others. These leaders must not only accomplish, they must communicate. By regularly giving speeches, gaining feedback, leading teams and guiding others to achieve their goals in a supportive atmosphere, leaders emerge from the Toastmasters program. Every Toastmasters journey begins with a single speech. During their journey, they learn to tell their stories. They listen and answer. They plan and lead. They give feedback—and accept it. Through our community of learners, they find their path to leadership.
